The Will of the People, Ignored - Progressive.org
Dec 10, 2018
It says, “The will of the people is the law of the land.”
The quote is from former Wisconsin Governor Robert “Fighting Bob” La Follette, the founder of The Progressive. It gained renewed irony this week as the Republican-controlled Wisconsin legislature rushed through a package of bills designed to diminish the authority of the newly elected Democratic governor and attorney general, and suppress Democratic voting.
More than a thousand Wisconsin residents came to the state capital Monday to register their opinion on the bills. Some waited as long as ten hours for their chance to give two minutes of testimony.
For all of the bills that passed, the number of people testifying in favor was the same: zero.
What follows is the list of registrations (from the state legislature’s website, typos included) for one of these bills, to prevent the new governor from revoking rule changes obtained by the current governor for recipients of federal aid.
Registering in favor:
none.
